To begin this spell, gather together the following ingredients to make an offering to Exu of the Seven Crossroads: seven matchboxes; seven cigars; seven black-and-red candles; a long red, black, and white piece of cloth; a handful of yellow corn, a bottle of cachaca, one portion of farofa de dende; and one portion of canjica (corn cooked with salt) containde in a clay casserole dish. Also fill a bottle with water and cap it.
Wrap everything in a bundle, and go to a crossroads. Take out the botte of water, kneel down, and spill some on the ground three times, first in front of you, then to your left, then to your right.
In your mind's eye, picture Exu of the Seven Crossroads with his pointed ears and beard. He is enveloped in an enormous red cape; seven crosses spring from the ground at his feet. Invoke this lusty entity with these words:
The one who decants water before himself or herself will walk on fertile ground.
Make a fist with the hand you use least. Dip the fingers of the hand you use most in one of the wet spots you made on the ground. After you moisten your finger, strike the palm of your open hand against your closed fist. Repeat the procedure with the other two wet spots. The last time you strike your fist, open your hand ans say:
Three times I invoke you,
Exu of the Seven Crossroads,
three times as if they were one!
Lay out the cloth on the ground in front of you and arrange on top of it the items you have brought for the offering. Light the candles, open the matchboxes near the cigars, and let the match heads protrude. Open the bottle of cachaca, set it down, and place the dish of corn in front of it. Sprinkle the farofa de dende on top of the canjica. Stand with the dish of canjica in both your hands, and extend your arms straight out in front of you over the rest of the offering. In this way you honor your future.
Next, you need to honor your past. Transfer the dish of canjica to one hand, move it carefully behind your back with bent elbow, then grab onto the casserole dish with boths hands. Once you have the bowl of canjica secured in both hands, extend your arms behind you as straight as you can. You may have to bend your body forward to accomplish this. Repeat the same gesture with outstretched arms holding the canjica to your right, thereby celebrating the astral world, and finally to your left, in homage to the material world.
Deposit the dish of canjica in the center of the cloth, by way of saluting the present. Say:
May the earth bear witness that in the place
I, (say your name),
salute the powers of all the Exus.
With these gestures I forge
a link in the present time with my ancestors from the past
so that Exu of the Seven Crossroads who knows
everything about my past,
may chart my future and my path.
Exu, I entreat you to knock down the barriers,
fill the potholes, drive away my enemies,
and any and all instability, envy, sickness,
and fear that blocks the road!
